Cambridge Wildlife and Fishing Area
Abandoned Sewer Treatment Lagoon Conversion to Ecologically-Sound Ecosystem and Fishery
SetterTech, in conjunction with the Village of Cambridge, developed the concept of turning an abandoned waste water treatment lagoon into an ecologically sound, self-sustaining ecosystem capable of sustaining fish and wildlife populations. The plan involved researching ground water levels, permit requirements, existing infrastructure, soil types, surrounding landscape, watershed, site access and public opinion. Upon completion of the plan, an ecologically diverse lake bottom capable of sustaining fish populations through winter was designed, wetland cells were created, emergent vegetation and wildlife structures were formed, and native shoreline restoration methods were completed. This plan also included grading calculations, implementation of habitat structures, ADA accessible fishing structures and parking lot layout. Continuation of this process brought on the development of interactive signage development, monitoring activities with DNR oversight and the procurement of grant funding. Connectivity of this fishing park has been addressed through the development of a bike trail system through village and privately held lands. A stewardship grant totaling $100,000 was received for this project based upon the developed plan. This project has become a focal point for local recreation.
