Jay Settersten is a horticulturist / plant scientist and expert in native vegetation, erosion control and storm water management. His experience includes infiltration facility management, sediment analysis in stormwater situations, shoreline management, and prairie restoration / establishment. Mr. Settersten has 23 years of experience in the private sector as well as municipalities and public organizations.
Throughout his tenure, Mr. Settersten has studied all phases of plant life and soils through the University of Wisconsin Madison BSAg Hort/BIN ’90 and has spent a brief time studying root systems with Dr. Alex Shigo of Cornell University. Aside from his formal education, Mr. Settersten has gained most of his practical knowledge through field experience. Knowledge of plant life, soils and ecological technologies has allowed him to participate in a wide range of projects including shoreline restorations on Lake Belle View and Lake Winnipeg Canada, studying and repairing of storm water facilities including rain gardens and bio-retention systems in various municipalities and numerous solutions to ecological concerns throughout the country. He has spent many hours traveling the Midwest and Canada promoting new ecological methods and technologies doing all he can to raise enthusiasm and a forward thinking mindset throughout his industry and beyond. He has managed over 300 people during his career in both the private and public sector.
Mr. Settersten maintains or has been a past member of the following organizations: North American Stormwater and Erosion Control Association (NASECA) where he currently the President of this organization, Minnesota Erosion Control Association (MECA), the International Erosion Control Association (IECA), He also maintains membership in habitat organizations such as Ducks Unlimited and Pheasants Forever where he has been a keynote speaker for state and national events covering vegetation and habitat establishment for wildlife.
Mr. Settersten is the President of SetterTech “Natural Environment Technologies” where his role is business and new product development. He is certified and licensed as an Erosion Control Inspector through the Department of Commerce in the State of Wisconsin, Wildland Firefighter; obtaining his certification through the National Wildfire Group and the Wisconsin DNR in 2005 and he is a certified Pesticide Applicator through the State of Wisconsin DATCP. He is also serving on the Lake Ripley Management District – Project Review and Land Owner Incentives committees and has served as a commissioner to the Plan Commission for the Village of Cambridge Wisconsin from July 2003 through August 2006.
